대학입시에서 에세이는 언제나 당락을 결정하는 가장 중요한 요소입니다.

그러나 이제 아시아계 지원자들에게 완벽한 에세이는 중요함을 넘어 필수적인 요소 (indispensable)가 되었습니다.

미국 대학 입학 과정에서 에세이는 최근 ‘하버드대학 아시안 차별 소송’으로 인해 훨씬 더 중요 해졌습니다. 

최근 뉴욕 타임즈(New York Times)에 나온 기사를 참고하십시오.

“Asian-Americans fall far behind other groups in the entirely subjective “personal” rating.

Harvard admission officers, Students for Fair Admissions (SFA) found, “assign Asian Americans the lowest score of any racial group on the personal rating—a ‘subjective’ assessment of such traits as whether the student has a ‘positive personality’ and ‘others like to be around him or her,’ has ‘character traits’ such as ‘likability . . . helpfulness, courage, [and] kindness,’ is an ‘attractive person to be with,’ is ‘widely respected,’ is a ‘good person,’ and has good ‘human qualities.’

” What’s striking about this disparity is that Harvard gives two personal ratings—one assigned by the admissions office, and one assigned by alumni interviewers who actually meet the applicants.

With the alumni, Asian-Americans score as high as any other ethnic group, and much higher than blacks or Hispanics.

But among campus-bound officers, who review a paper record, Asian- Americans score far lower on personal ratings than any other racial group.

This factor, SFA alleges, depresses the overall ratings of Asian-American applicants and substantially reduces their chances at admission: An Asian-American applicant with a 25 percent chance of admission would have a 35 percent chance if he were white, a 75 percent chance if he were Hispanic, and a 95 percent chance if he were black. SFA’s analysis concluded that “[r]ace plays such a decisive role in the admissions chances of Hispanics and African Americans that the percentage of Asian-Americans admitted to Harvard would increase by 40% if all racial preferences and penalties were eliminated.”

This long-term arrangement requires dedication and hard work – on the part of both the student and the parents. I will be intimately involved in every aspect of the student’s life to ensure the highest probability of admission to the school of choice.

하버드대는 입학 사정 시 학업성적과 특별활동, 운동, 개인적 특성, 종합적인 평가 등

총 5개 항목을 평가하고 있으며 항목별로 가장 좋은 평가인 1등급에서부터 6등급까지 점수를 매깁니다.

특히 ‘개인적 특성 항목’에서 좋은 등급을 받는 비율은 백인 지원자들이

아시아계 미국인보다 월등히 높은 것으로 조사되었습니다. 

‘개인적 특성 항목’ 은 에세이로 평가되며, 에세이를 통해 지원자가 학교에

‘Me, Myself and I’를 가장 잘 보여줄 수 있는 유일한 기회입니다.

즉 에세이에 본인을 얼마나 잘 표현하는가에 따라 지원자의 대학 합격과 불합격이 결정됩니다.
